The moveable party and beatbox showcase, the Vowel Movement, returns to Ashkenaz, this time with an intense Beatbox Battle hosted by Eachbox and Joshua Walters.
Beatboxing is the art of using the mouth to create all sorts of music in addition to traditional singing. It has developed into not just a style but an art form of its own, wherein artists conjure an endless array of instruments and sounds, all to driving rhythms done only with voices and hands on body. This “fifth element of hip hop” originated in the early ’80s, on street corners, in stairwells, schoolyards and small clubs, and has been developing underground for years. Now, in the same way that DJing and turntablism swept the world in the ’90s, beatboxing is exploding.
Tonight the hosts and The Genie perform in showcases demonstrating the power of the human voice, along with the actual competition featuring some of the area’s most creative beatboxers: Soulati (Felonious), Cornbread, Syzygy, DC, Constant Change, Monkstilo, Maximillion, Icebox, I.O. Beatbox, and more!
